• Administrative / Biographical History

  The Corporation of the City of Glasgow was created in November 1895. It comprised the previous Town Council, former trusts and commissions. The functions of these former bodies were thereafter carried out by Glasgow Corporation departments.

  During its existence, Glasgow Corporation was responsible for many functions including architecture and civic design; burials and cremation; civil defence; education; fire brigade; gas and electricity; health services; licensing; parks, galleries and museums; poor law; transport; telephones and the water supply.

  In 1975 Glasgow Corporation ceased to exist when local government re-organisation in Scotland replaced the burghs and city corporations with a two-tier system of local authority. The Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994 created Glasgow District Council and Strathclyde Regional Council which succeeded Glasgow Corporation and distributed its functions between them.
