Administrative / Biographical History
The Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds was founded at Ashton-under-Lyne in 1826. The philosophy of the organisation grew from being a sickness and burial society into a secret society with its own ceremonies and mysteries, drawing their mythology from biblical inspiration, emphasising the pastoral aspects of mutuality.
A Glasgow District was established in 1882, and The Vale of Levern Lodge (no. 2096) was founded under it in 1886 at the Good Templars Hall, Robertson St., Barrhead.
The society was made increasingly redundant with the development of the welfare state after the Second World War, although the Barrhead Branch continued with a more social role for some time thereafter, and, nationally, the renamed Shepherds' Friendly Society was still functioning into the 21st century.
