These streets were built so that the fronts of the houses were supported by rows of pillars, creating a piazza underneath. It is proposed to eliminate these piazzas which have become inconvenient and frequented by thieves, by allowing the proprietors of the shops to extend their premises to enclose what now forms the footpath or piazza. The memorialists seek counsel's opinion as to whether they have the power to sell the space which has been used by the public as a footpath for nearly a century.
