Administrative / Biographical History
The early history of the Burgh of Lauder is not clear. It is thought to have become a Royal Burgh of Burgh of Barony in favour of James Douglas during the reign of King Robert I (1306-1329). Upon the forfeiture of the Douglases, in 1455, Lauder became a Royal Burgh. This status was reconfirmed by King James IV in 1502. Lauder was a Police Burgh from 1864 and became a Small Burgh in 1929. When burghs were abolished in 1975 Lauder became part of the Ettrick and Lauderdale district in the Borders Region. In 1996 it became part of the Scottish Borders council area.
