Administrative / Biographical History
John Frederick Sleeman was born in Durham, England, on the 1 June 1915 . He studied at St Andrews University, graduating in 1937 with a First Class MA Honours in Economics and Modern History. He then won the Ramsay Research Scholarship and spent two years at Manchester University in the Economics Research Section under Professor John Jewkes and Daniel Norman Chester. He gained his MA with Commendation in 1939. He then served as an Instructor in the Army Educational Corps. In 1946, he was appointed Assistant in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Glasgow. In 1949, he was promoted to Lecturer on Social Economics. He was made Senior Lecturer circa 1977, and three years later, in 1980, he retired. His publications include: British Public Utilities, (1953); Basic Economic Problems: A Christain Approach, (1954); The Welfare State: its Aims, Benefits and Costs, (1973); Economic Crisis: a Christian Perspective, (1976).
