Scope and Content
St Andrews in the fifties. Memories of school and college.
Being the memories of Sir Hector C Cameron (1843-1928) previously published in the Glasgow Herald, January 1928, with a biographical note by Joshua Ferguson. Most concern life variously as a pupil at Madras College [St Andrews, Fife] and at the University of St Andrews in the eighteen fifties, with anecdotes on many of the professors at the University.
Administrative / Biographical History
Sir Hector C Cameron (1843-1928), surgeon. Born in 1843, son of Donald Cameron, sugar planter in Demerara, Cameron went to school at Madras College, St Andrews and then studied at the United College of St Andrews University, graduating in 1862. He went on to study medicine at Glasgow University and then worked as a surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary from 1868 until 1881 and then at the Western Infirmary. In 1900, he became professor of clinical surgery at the University of Glasgow, retiring in 1910.
