• Administrative / Biographical History

  Donald Buchanan Brown was born in 1910 at Connel near Oban. In 1934 he obtained his MB ChB from the University of Glasgow. His first appointment was as house surgeon to Mr Willie Campbell at the Western Infirmary. After 6 months he was reallocated to the Burns and Septics Unit at the same hospital. His third appointment came as Casualty Officer at Dudley Road Hospital Birmingham where he was influenced by English medical practices. During the late 1930s Brown was heavily involved in the Territorial Army and in 1938 became Junior Medical Officer in the 7th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry later the Heavy Anti-aircraft Regiment. During the Second World War he was posted to Northern Ireland and India. In 1940 he was promoted to Major. Post war, Brown was appointed 'Dispensary Surgeon' by the Board of the Western Infirmary and was officially recognisd as Chief surgeon in 1961. Although he retired in 1975 Brown continued to practice as a locum surgeon in Ascension Island, Iraq and Antigua as well as in the Highlands and Islands. In fact Brown continued dissecting until his 84th year.

  Donald Buchanan Brown became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Fellow of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1947. He died on 29th April 2006.

  Professor A.E. Stuart gained his MB ChB from the University of Glasgow in 1948 and FRCP Ed and FRS Ed in 1970. Now retired, he was formerly Professor of Pathology at the University of Newcastle. Dr Alexander Reid Morrison gained his MB ChB from Glasgow University in 1949 and became a FRCP Glas. in 1977. Now retired, he was formerly Chief Administrative Medical Officer for the Highland Health Board. Professor Eldred Wright Walls gained his MB ChB from the University of Glasgow in 1934 and MD in 1947. He became FRCS Eng in 1976 and FRCS Ed in 1981. He was formerly Emeritus Professor of Anatomy at the University of London. All three collaborated on the celebration publication of the 90th Birthday of Donald Buchanan Brown, consultant surgeon at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow.
