Scope and Content
The correspondence spans Carter's appointment to Beale's research group, his ongoing research and his work at the National Institutes of Health, Maryland. Also present are letters from the Medical Research Council regarding funding for Carter's post and Beale and Carter's reports of work to the Council.
Much of the correspondence appears to consist of Carter's letters to Beale, with copies of Beale's replies not present.
Administrative / Biographical History
Richard Carter gained his PhD in Genetics from the University of Edinburgh in 1971. He was involved with the early development of genetic analysis of malaria parasites using a rodent malaria and initiated the study of population genetics in human malaria. He returned to the University of Edinburgh in 1986 after spells in America and Sri Lanka, utilising genomic techniques for the genetic analysis of malaria parasites.
