Scope and Content
The Edward H. Tarr Collection includes scholarly music editions prepared by Dr. Tarr (including preparatory research for same); biographical research on trumpeters; unpublished theses and dissertations on the subject of brasswind instruments and performance; trumpet method books and Dr. Tarr's own output, including scholarly publications and performance recordings.
Administrative / Biographical History
Edward Hankins Tarr was an American trumpet player and researcher. An early proponent of Baroque trumpet, Tarr's research and urtext editions of trumpet repertory remain the standards for scholarly performance.
Director of the Trumpet Museum in Bad Säckingen in Germany, a town with associated with author Joseph Victor von Scheffel's nineteenth-century novel 'The Trumpeter of Bad Säckingen', Tarr's interest in the trumpet ranged from the earliest to its most modern iterations; from Giuseppe Torelli to Mauricio Kagel and Marcus Stockhausen.
