Bion was a psychoanalyst who helped devise techniques of officer selection in World War II and was interested in studies of groups. He undertook group studies at Tavistock Clinic and chaired the Planning Committee that reorganised the Tavistock into the new Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. He was also President of the Medical Section of the British Psychological Society.
