Administrative / Biographical History
Born in Broughty Ferry in 1895, Ian Cheyne was educated at Glasgow Academy and studied at Glasgow School of Art. Originally a painter, from the mid - 1920s he specialised in colour woodcuts of Scottish, Spanish and French landscapes, working in a technique and style derived from Japanese prints, but adding his own, very lively Art Deco accent. He also continued to produce still lifes and landscapes in oils. Cheyne was Treasurer of the Society of Artist Printers during the Presidency of E.S. Lumsden (see GMA A.18). Cheyne exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1920 until his death in 1955.
