• Scope and Content

  Files of records relating to particular RSA exhibitions. Note, files for 1827 - 1939 are not present. Additional details pertaining to the early exhibitions are to be found in the Council Minutes and the Annual Reports. The Voucher Collection holds some related expenses, including the firms of tradesmen engaged to undertake the installation and de-mounts [for many years J Taylor & Son] local food and drink establishments for catering, printers, etc. The Letter Collection contains letters from private collectors who lent works to the exhibitions, insurance policies for same, letters from exhibitors accompanying their submission of works, or notifying the Academy of private sales they have made of works in the Annuals. The keeping of specific exhibition files is of much more recent date and the period spanning the first half of the 20th century is particularly poor in coverage. The Cuttings Books, and files of press cuttings may also hold useful information, whilst the sale of works have been routinely maintained in registers since 1861.
