Administrative / Biographical History
The Academy’s Supplementary Charter of 1891, Clause 10, p.22 required it to commit one third of its annual income to Educational purposes. The matter was raised in 1944 (Council 1944-10-10) when it was stated that between 1921 and 1941 the Academy had exceeded this proportion. The Academy’s Chartered Accountant was asked to submit a statement of the Academy’s Educational transactions since 1911, the date of the transfer of the Academy School of Painting to the Edinburgh College of Art. The first recorded mention of the Educational Fund appears to be made in a Council Minute of 1946-12-11 where it is referred to as the “Education Endowment Fund.” There do not appear to be any extant Minutes for this Fund which appears to have been primarily concerned with various of the Academy’s student awards, including the Carnegie Scholarship. Box File 61 “internal Affairs 1946-52” contains an envelope of typed correspondence 1947-48, between the RSA and the Scottish Art Schools including student applications, including one from Joan Eardley.
Blue Archive Box “Guthrie Award & Others” contains a “Stanhope Back Spring File” containing details of Student Prizes 1910-39, Carnegie Scholarship winners 1903-39, The Chartered Accountant’s “Memorandum as to Expenditure on Educational Purposes 1911 to 1943” and various other lists and correspondence.
