Administrative / Biographical History
The Academy has always been hamstrung by a lack of dedicated exhibition space without the constraints of finance and programming. Receipts and sponsorship from exhibitions has long been crucial for the financial stability of the Academy so the priority has always been for exhibitions which provide income generation. The very first exhibition mounted by the Academy was that to show off its major and costly (even at discounted price) acquisition of a series of large oil paintings by William Etty RA HRSA, which were hung alongside the newly created Diploma deposit Collection in 1831. It was the acquisition by the Academy of another significant body of studies painted in situ from the Old Masters by J F Lewis RA which formed the core of its second major exhibition in 1853.
