Scope and Content
Whereas the 1891 Supplementary charter application was beset by complaints from the Architects, so too that of 1895 faced opposition from the Society of Scottish Artists. This was in regard to the proposed Clause 7, effectively a re-insertion of a clause from the original Charter of 1838 which had been removed in 1891; namely that “any Member of the Academy elected prior to 1891-10-31 [the date of granting of the 1891 Supplementary Charter ] or subsequent to 1894-10-31 [the date by which the Academy hoped to have secured its 1894 Supplementary Charter] who became a member of any other Society of Artists established and exhibiting in Edinburgh shall forfeit his membership of the Academy, and all rights and privileges pertaining thereto.”
