Administrative / Biographical History
Coltness Iron Co Ltd, Newmains, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, began its association with the Coventry Colliery at Kersley, near Coventry, England, in 1902 . The company became known as the Warwickshire Coal Co Ltd and was managed by William Hamilton Telfer, who was also general manager, and then chair, of the Coltness Iron Co Ltd between 1922 and 1946. The colliery failed to make a profit from 1911, but by 1924, 2 years after Telfer took over, the company was back in profit. By 1947, the Coventry Colliery was the deepest and largest in the south midlands and was producing 1 million tons of coal per year.
In 1935, the company took over the Sandwell Park Colliery, Staffordshire, England, and planned to build a modern miner's village next to the colliery similar to that managed by the Coventry Colliery Industrial Housing Ltd at the Coventry Colliery. These plans were abandoned at the outbreak of the Second World War.
The Warwickshire Coal Co Ltd was nationalised as part of the National Coal Board in 1947 under the terms of the Coal Industry Nationalisation Act 1946.
