Scope and Content
The bulk of this archive consists of the minute books of the Society's Education Committee Minutes, 1936-61. There is also material relating to associated (?) Women's Guilds, a bound volume of "The Scottish Co-operator" for the year 1915, and the account book of "Miss Brown ...in account with John Gibb and Son" [It seems that this last item may be extraneous: it is possible that it had been stored in the box containing the Co-op records without any prior natural association].
Administrative / Biographical History
The Barrhead Co-operative Society was officially inaugurated on 11th January 1861 and opened its first shop in Main Street beside Bourock Parish Church. It ran its own grocers, bakers, butchers, hardware department, delivery of coal and milk, drapery, and education committee [Information from ERC's "Portal to the Past"].
