Scope and Content
Letters concern Heilbron's news that he is to be the new Director of a new Institute of Brewing Research Institute to be set up in the south of England and his offer for Pontecorvo to join his team there to research the chemistry, biochemistry and biology of fermentation. Pontecorvo turned down the position because his main focus was researching the genetics of microorganisms and he believed he was making progress with training up some new Glasgow graduates to work in this field, and with developing research faciltities at Glasgow. He did complain about the one drawback in Glasgow being "limited contacts with people working in cognate fields," and it is clear that he intended to change this by making Glasgow a centre of expertise in the genetics of microorganisms and attracting researchers and academics to his department.
