Administrative / Biographical History
Pontecorvo was approached by Professor Salome Gluecksohn Waelsch to take on the Chairmanship of the new Department of Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. After much discussion about salary, holiday entitlement, plans for the new Ullman Research building, and the development of new courses for students, Pontecorvo accepted the position in November 1962. However, by February 1964 he had withdrawn his acceptance stating Leni's deteriorating health and the fact that they did not want to move too far away from their daughter Lisa (who had just become a student at the University of Oxford) as his main reasons.
