Scope and Content
The letters show that Pontecorvo was approached by Demeric who wanted a new member of research staff for his department. The offer caught Pontecorvo by surprise as he was had not thought of moving to the United States permanently. He explained that his decision would depend on whether or not he was successful in applying for permanent residency in the UK (at that stage the process was near completion but if h unsuccessful he was willing to move to New York). However, in the end he turned the job offer down as he was comitted to seeing through the job at Glasgow and focussing his energy on establishing the new Department of Genetics.
