Scope and Content
Pontecorvo was invited to the XIV International Congress of Genetics to be held in Moscow on 21-30 August 1978. He planned to go to this congress as well as spent 3 weeks in the Tien Shan doing some alpine plant field work, and another 2 or 3 weeks giving lectures and visiting Genetics Institutes. This trip was also cancelled due to the fact that Pontecorvo was not permitted to visit the Tien Shan to conduct some field work. He was told this was due to the fact this was a "militarily sensitive" area but did not believe this was the real reason and thought they could "find a better excuse". He refused to give up a summer season set aside for alpine research and for this reason decided not to go on the trip at all.
