Bronze statuette of male figure. Il Penseroso is a vision of poetic melancholy by John Milton.
Administrative / Biographical History
Born and raised in Reading, Berkshire and surrounding area. He taught sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art and later retired to Rushden, Hertfordshire. While living in Hertfordshire he continued to work and exhibit. Amongst his sculptures from the mid to late 1930s were a bronze statuette of 'Dummy' Barnes who was well-known local character in the North Hertfordshire area. Portsmouth died at Lister Hospital, Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

Presented to GSA in 1955 from estate of the sculptor Percy Portsmouth.
