Administrative / Biographical History
The Jewish community in Glasgow has, over the years, created a number of organisation to help its needy members. The Glasgow Hebrew Philanthropic Society dates to around 1858 and was based in the synagogue in George Street. It moved with the congregation to the new synagogue in Garnethill in 1879 and developed into the Glasgow Jewish Board of Guardians. By 1912, most of the recipients of the charity’s activities lived in the Gorbals and the organisation moved there in 1912, eventually opening a welfare centre and clinic in Thistle Street. In 1970, it moved again, to a building in Coplaw Street, Govanhill, where it was renamed the Glasgow Jewish Welfare Board. In 1996, it moved to its current premises in the Maccabi and Youth Centre complex in Giffnock and is now known as Jewish Care Scotland.
