Administrative / Biographical History
Woodward, Grosevenor & Co Ltd had its origin as far back as 1790 when Benjamin Grosvenor, from Shropshire, settled in Kidderminster as a maker of ropes and other cordage. His business grew and he passed it on to his son William who increased the range of materials produced including silks and Brussels carpets. The firm became known as William Grosvenor & Company. In 1883 the company was converted into a limited liability company and gained the name: Woodward, Grosvenor & Company Ltd. Later, in 1946, a holding company was formed which incorporated Woodward, Grosevenor & Co Ltd and William C Gray & Sons Ltd of Ayr along with other textile manufacturers in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Northern Ireland. The Parent company was named Gray's Carpets & Textiles Ltd. Eventually, in 1968, James Templeton & Co Ltd acquired Gray's Carpets & Textiles and the Gray's Carpets Ltd factory closed in 1971.
