Administrative / Biographical History
Galashiels was created a Burgh of Barony in favour of James Hoppringill or Pringle in 1599. In 1850 it became a Police Burgh. Under the Representation of the People (Scotland) Act, 1868, the town became a Parliamentary Burgh with 15 councillors, including a provost, 4 baillies and a treasurer. In 1930 it became a small Burgh under the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1929. When burghs were abolished in 1975 Galashiels became part of Ettrick and Lauderdale district in the Borders Region. In 1996 it became part of the Scottish Borders council area.
