Scope and Content
The John Subak-Sharpe collection contains a large amount of correspondence and documents from Vienna and elsewhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Also contains papers relating to Walter Brüll; brother of Nelly Subak; and his family.
Administrative / Biographical History
Brothers Herbert and Gerhard Subak left Vienna in January 1939 on a Kindertransport and were taken in by a London Jewish couple – David and Dorothy Peskin of Ealing. Their parents; Robert Subak and Nelly (Brüll) were deported and murdered in Riga in 1942. John (Herbert) and Gerald (Gerhard) changed their name to Sharpe when they joined the British Army. John studied Genetics at Birmingham University and moved to a post in Glasgow University in 1954. Later; he became Director of the MRC Unit and Professor of Virology at Glasgow University; 1968-1994. He died in 2020. Gerald became a professor of Electrical Engineering in New York.
