Scope and Content
Bundle of miscellaneous correspondence on various topics pertaining to engineering and business matters together with current, general and family affairs. Correspondents and contents include: Jane Carmichael, Broughty Ferry (Thanks PC for his many ‘gifts and kindnesses’); Robert Baxter, Drummond, Baxter & Co, Moulins Lille (discusses loom technology); James C, Lyell, Calcutta [PC’s nephew] (describes his journey to India and gives an account of the country); James L. Spence, the Tyne Iron Shipbuilding Company Limited, St. Peters, Newcastle upon Tyne (Discusses Spence’s business affairs and possibility of getting in touch with MPs to get work for the Admiralty; mentions Drummond’s return from France and asks for PC’s advice on a business matter with a copy reply from PC); James R. Napier, 22 Blythswood Square, Glasgow (discusses engineering matters and includes diagrams drawn by Napier; requests PC’s advice on canvas); Charles Mackie, Lady Lawsons Wynd, New Buildings, Edinburgh and 2 Shields Close St. James St. Paisley Road, Glasgow (Now nearly 70 and believes he is near the end of his life, Mackie discusses his ill health and mentions PC’s father; refers to earlier letter and history of spinning in Dundee –he is intending to write history of this up to 1831 which he hope PC will use and possibly continue [This is almost certainly MS 11/5/14]); D. Cruickshank, Southampton (Thanks PC for kindness he has shown to James [Cruickshank] who is working in Dundee; thanks PC for Christmas gifts); Lady Baxter, Kilmaron, Cupar, Fife (Discusses linen); Alex Graham, 1 Blenheim Place Edinburgh (apologises for his behaviour caused by drinking spirits, discusses application for mastership of school in Broughty Ferry and asks for money, includes copy reply from PC); Drummond Carmichael, À Ailly- sur-Somme (Tells PC of arrangements ‘Uncle’ [James Carmichael] has made for visit to Paris and consulting Dr. Nelaton ‘the first surgeon in the world at present’ and describes France; describes visit to Paris, Dr. Nelaton’s opinions of his ears, his visit to Dr. Friquet, hid opinions of Paris) Prof W. J. Macquorn Rankine, 59 St. Vincent Street, Glasgow (Thanks PC for his paper on canvas and indicates that he and J. R. Napier would like PC to present a paper to the Institute of Engineers in Scotland and the Scottish Shipbuilders Association; notes error in PC’s paper with draft reply from PC); D. Bruce Peebles, 16 East Norton Place, Edinburgh (acknowledges receipt of loan); J & J Miller, Blackfriars Street, Perth (Various letters relating to Bonhard House and other properties) D.
