Scope and Content
Correspondence: 1868. Miscellaneous topics pertaining to engineering and business matters together with current, general and family affairs. Correspondents and contents include: J R Mc Dougall, 1 Coberg Place, Palvern (Thanks PC for package he has sent); James Carmichael, À Ailly-sur-Somme France (Gives PC news of trade in France); Isaac Donald, New Rattray, Blairgowrie (Informs PC of his life since leaving his service and asks him for a cast off coat or trousers); Sir David Baxter, Moray place (Discusses textile trade; sorry to hear of PC’s health problems and discusses business and personal matters); Mrs Stewart, Memel (Is moving to South Germany for health reasons); James Spence, Albion Iron Works, St Peters, Newcastle on Tyne (mentions recent visit to Scotland; correspondence on a bill for £1,000 sent to James Spence by PC; various letters relating to PCs financial assistance to Spence’s business and the difficulties it faces –including letter from William Hood & Co Ltd); Mrs Margaret Skinner, Auldearn, Nairn (asks for PC’s financial assistance, asks for money for her son Lewis Skinner); Captain Duncan, Port Glasgow (discusses shipping matters) James Carmichael, À Ailly-sur-Somme France ( reports death of Robert Baxter; discusses his visit to Robert Baxter’s family and discussions with Drummond Baxter); William Stewart, 164 New Cross Road, London (updates PC on his progress in finding a business or employment); Charles Nairne, Edinburgh (correspondence relating to subscription paper for memorial to Nairn’s father, William Nairne, including a copy letter from PC with list of subscribers); James Brebner (thanks PC for loan of statistical account, encloses constitution for Dundee YMCA Naturalists Field Club and mentions its forthcoming visit to Bonhard); Miss James, Golspie (asks for loan of £25 or £30. A copy reply from PC is enclosed at which PC mentions having to go to Perth to vote for an ‘unpopular candidate’); Andrew Heiton, George Street, Perth (letter accompanying photograph of church in Dublin and Heiton’s design for Perth Station Hotel); W. G.
