Scope and Content
Correspondence: 1866. Miscellaneous topics pertaining to engineering and business matters together with current, general and family affairs. Correspondents and contents include: James Carmichael, À Ailly-sur-Somme France (enquires about James [his son?], who is working for PC in Dundee – a draft reply gives PC’s opinion and reports on Mr Small’s son whom he regretted employing; thanks PC for his letter about James); Sir David Baxter, 5 Moray Place (discusses economic situation in Dundee; relates to construction work at Dens Works with PCs copy reply; discuses various business matters); J & J Miller, Blackfriars Street, Perth (Various letters relating mostly to Bonhard House. Contents include: Owing to Mr Macduff being ill he would like PC to rent Bonhard for a longer period. PC’s draft replies indicate that he would like to rent Bonhard for the next few years; Indicates PC’s proposal does not appeal to Mr Macduff and suggests alternative – PC’s copy reply indicates this would not be suitable; makes alternative offers which PC is agreeable to; changes terms of lease for Bonhard; informs PC of asking price for Glenearn; Copy from PC to J&J Millar saying he has decided against purchasing Glenearn); James Spence, Newcastle on Tyne (Updates PC on his career; discusses the bible); J. W. Carmichael, 13 St Marks Crescent, Regents Park Road, Regents Park ( relates to PC purchase of paintings from him, with PC’s copy reply; Thanks PC for recommending him to Mr [William] O[gilvie] Dalgleish); Andrew Brown, Monifieth (Thanks PC for silver box): Jas. Stewart, Memel (Asks for PC [Stewart’s brother-in-law] to use his influence to help secure the British vice-consulship in Memel. Letter includes a draft from PC to Sir John Ogilvy Bart. [MP for Dundee] asking him to get Stewart’s name placed before the Earl of Clarendon [the Foreign Secretary] for consideration) Jas. C Lyell, Calcutta [PC’s nephew] (thanks PC for letter and gift and describes his life in India); Charles Mackie, Shields Place, St. James St. Paisley Road, Glasgow (letter is to accompany his review of the beginning of flax spinning in Forfarshire and Fifeshire and explains the background to it [This likely to be the original of MS 11/5/14]; Payment of subscription to Albert Institute; Sir John Ogilvy [MP] 17 Grafton Street, London (Informs PC that James’ Stewart’s application has been unsuccessful); Dr Crombie, Manse, Scone (Looks forward to PC’s returning to Bonhard house and gives details of Mr Macduff’s health); W Smythe, Fechney Industrial School (covering letter sent with annual report of school and informing PC of developments at the school); Charles Campbell, Institute of Naval Architects, 7 Adelphi Terrace, London (inquiries whether PC would like to become an associate of the institution); David Russell, Wesley Villa, Queen’s Park, Glasgow(thanks PC for £25 collection); D. Cruickshank, Southampton (Had been concerned that he and his family had family were growing apart from PC so delighted to receive PC’s letter. Takes the opportunity to indicate his personal circumstances and his financial difficulties); John Easthope, Royal Dock Yard, Deptford (Thanks PC for his paper on canvas and expresses his enjoyment of time he spent with PC’s family; Thanks PC for basket of game and discusses canvas). D B[ruce] Peebles, 91 West Gilmore Pace, Edinburgh (Express opinion of how to deal with ‘fire brands’ in Dundee and mentions men on Clyde grumbling and demonstration in Edinburgh [political protests connected to second reform act?]); Robert Baxter, Drummond Baxter & Cie, Filature De Jute, Moulins-Lille (Asks if PC can find a situation for John Baxter, son of his cousin Theodore Baxter); Miss Baxter, Balgavies (sending PC photographs of her father) Lewis Carmichael, London (Is going to Doctors’ Commons to search for his grandfather’s will); Notice of assessment of property tax; R. H. Irvine (account for disposal of the IV gift of £5. Lists of persons receiving money and persons receiving flannel shirts); Dr Henry Boase, Claverhouse (Mentions PC’s trip to France and hopes it will ‘alleviate’ PC’s ‘sufferings’ and discuses bleach field).
