• Administrative / Biographical History

  Irving Selikoff was born in New York City in 1925. He studied medicine at Glasgow and Melbourne, Australia and took the Triple Examination in Glasgow in 1945. He completed his clinical training in the United States and specialised in chest medicine. In 1952 he was instrumental in demonstrating the effectiveness of isoniazid as a treatment for tuberculosis, especially in patients not helped by traditional therapies. He was a pioneer of environmental and occupational medicine who promoted research into the dangers of asbestos and campaigned against its use. He held the post of Director of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine from 1966 to his retirement in 1985.
