• Administrative / Biographical History

  The Glasgow and West of Scotland Medical Association was established in 1868. Its aim was “the promotion of medical science by the publication of a journal, to be called the Glasgow Medical Journal”. This very specific purpose was to ensure the survival of the Journal which had been experiencing financial difficulties since its inception in 1828. By subscribing to a guarantee fund, the members of the Association were able put the journal on a sound financial footing. The Association merged with the Royal-Medico Chirurgical Society of Glasgow in 1944 and, in conjunction with the Scottish Society of Experimental Medicine, continues to support the publication of the Scottish Medical Journal.
