Administrative / Biographical History
The Glasgow - East Kilbride Railway Development Association was formed in November 1963 in response to the proposed closure of the line by Lord Beeching. The organisation continued to promote the line, and to campaign against later proposals to close Giffnock and Thornliebank stations. By 1984 the Association claimed to be the "oldest continuously active railway association in Scotland".
An early leading light in the Society (initially called the East Kilbride Railway Development Association) was Jack Broadbent, who served as Hon. Sec. until his death in 1982. Thereafter, the Secretary was Mrs. Helen Broadbent.
