Scope and Content
I - City of Glasgow Police Criminal Returns for the Year Ending 31 December 1896. Includes figures for numbers taken into custody for what crimes and how they were disposed of by the magistrates with divisions by sex, place of birth, age, education etc; number of visits and inspections made by Police to piggeries, stables, hackney cabs etc; inspection of meat; number of fatal and non-fatal accidents; reports made to other Corporation Departments such as Water, Gas etc of problems; wages and length of service of Police; number of vagrants; etc.
II - Report of the Glasgow Fire Brigade for the year ending December 1896 with description of premises in which fires occurred and supposed causes; way in which alarm given, source of water, how fire extinguished etc; numerical strength of brigade and quantities of equipment.
III - Second Annual Report on Work Done in Connection with Statute Labour Department for the year 1 June 1896 to 31 May 1897 with sections on paving; street improvements; sewer work; number of workmen employed; claims for damages; public weighing machines; public conveniences; drinking fountains and water troughs; bridges; trees in streets; and statement of approvals made by the Dean of Guild.
IV - Report by the Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures for year ending 31 May 1897 with number of business inspected; statement of income and expenditure; number of staff; and work done under the Petroleum Acts.
V - Twenty-Seventh Annual Report on the Operations of the Sanitary Department of the City of Glasgow for the year ending 31 December 1896 with table by district of nuisances, lodging houses, night inspections for overcrowding, female visitations, drain testing, infectious diseases, vaccinations, bakehouses, factories and workshops, byres dairies and milk shops, adulteration of food, dead meat inspection, limewashing, reception houses, interments and infringments under the Shop Acts; work done by nuisance and epidemic inspectors by sub-division; and the work of the wash-houses at Belvidere and Ruchill.
VI - Report of the City of Glasgow Fever and Smallpox Hospitals for the year ending 31 May 1897 with sections on admissions; monthly distribution of principal diseases; number of diseases treated in each hospital with figures for scarlet fever, enteric fever, typhus fever, measles, whooping-cough, erysipelas and smallpox.
VII - Statement of the Revenue and Expenditure of the Cleansing Department for the year ended 31 May 1897 with sections on disposal of refuse; cleansing of private street and closes; public conveniences; accounts of Corporation farms; revenue and expenditure; and report of the sewage works manager.
VIII - Labour Bureau Annual Report with figures for Glasgow compared to other British bureaux.
IX - The Distribution of Tuberculous Diseases in Glasgow with Observations on the Relation of Phthisis to Room-Density by A K Chalmers, Medical Officer of Health
X - Glasgow Main Drainage - Memorandum by the City Engineer with map showing the route of the authoriseed outfall and intercepting sewers and the site of the proposed sewage works.
