The Nuisances Committee was initially established under the Nuisances Removal (Scotland) Act 1856. A further Act was passed in 1862 and from November 1862 the committee was renamed the Sanitary Committee of the Board of Police of Glasgow. From 24 January 1870 it was renamed again as the Committee of Health.
The committee dealt with nuisances by street, property or company; uninhabitable houses; appointments; overcrowding; lodging houses; whitewashing and fumigation; removal of fever patients; and reports by the Medical Officer of Health and Inspector of Cleansing. Over time the Committee had a number of sub-committees. From around 1894 these included: on the Shop Hours Acts; Open Spaces and Children's Playgrounds; Ruchill Wash House; Food and Milk Supply; Sanitary Office Accommodation and new Sanitary Chambers; Insanitary Condition of Tailors Workshops; City Improvement Trust; and on the Congress of British Institute of Public Health.
From 1900, the sub-committees were Hospitals; Sanitary Offices, Open Spaces etc; Inspection of Meat and Fish; Prevention of Tuberculosis; Sale of Food and Drugs Acts; Uninhabitable Houses and the Condition of Back Lands; Black Smoke; and Cholera Precautions. From 1905 were added: Infant Mortality and Milk Suply of the City; Factory and Workshop Acts; Reception-House Accommodation; Shop Hours Act; Malarial Fever; Tuberculosis (Animals) Compensation Bill; Customs of Hairdressers; Conference re Inspection of Animals at Merklands; Aliens Act 1905; Transmission of Articles for Bacterial Examination; and Relationship between Abuse of Alcoholic Stimulants and Physical Deterioration.
