Administrative / Biographical History
Efforts to support Jewish children and young people with learning disabilities began in Glasgow in the 1950s and in 1960, when Mrs Carrie Hill secured the support of Rev. Dr. I K Cosgrove of Garnethill Hebrew Congregation for the campaign. The Glasgow Jewish Association of Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped was formed and based on the model of the Ravenswood Home in London, a 15-room house at 6 St. John’s Road, Pollokshields was purchased, opening as a residential home in 1964. A youth committee Jewish Association for Mentally Handicapped (JAMHAC) was formed in 1963 to help with fundraising and a variety of events were held over the years. In the 1990s, the organisation changed its name to Cosgrove Care, named after Dr Cosgrove, and moved to the model of independent living. The Pollokshields home was sold and replaced with properties in Giffnock. For many years, Cosgrove Care had a supported employment scheme based on 2 shops in Shawlands.
