Note
'Born at Tizapan, Mexico on 6 September 1854. After leaving Cheltenham, it seems that JCL went into business with some friends, but it failed. AFL refused to bail the company out, so JCL then joined the Army and rose to the rank of Colonel. At Christmas 1955, while I was doing my National Service in the RAF in Germany, I spent my leave visiting Henry Threlfall, head of Unilever in Europe, who was living in Brussels. He was a great friend of JCL, and a friend of other members of the family. He told me JCL was a most fascinating man who had spent much of his life in the army attending many of the major world events of the late 19th and early 20th century, which occurred before he died on 21. August 1942 at Hove, Sussex.'
