Miscellaneous papers of the British Fisheries Society including rentals and papers relating to the development of the harbour of Tobermory. The British Fisheries Society was founded in 1786 and set out to establish fishing stations around the coast of Scotland. Tobermory was founded as a fishing station in 1788 and The BFS had the land westwards of the Allt na Creithe burn which formed the march with Mishnish land. In 1844 the BFS sold their portion of Tobermory to David Nairne of Drumkilbo for £5,000, excluding the breastwork, the pier and Sinclair's quay which were retained until 1892. See Jean Dunlop, "The British Fisheries Society" 1786-1893.
