  E. Waymouth Reid, (first name Edward) was born 11 October 1862 in Canterbury, the fourth son of a surgeon there, James Reid, F.R.C.S. He matriculated at Cambridge University in 1879, where he gained a first class in Part I and II of the Natural Science Tripos. At St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1885 he qualified M.B. and M.R.C.S. and was an assistant electrician there. At St Mary's Hospital he was a demonstrator in physiology from 1885 to 1887 and a lecturer in physiology from 1887 to 1889. During the period he was at St Mary’s, he carried out in conjunction with Waller interesting investigations on the electrical activity of the excised mammalian heart. This investigation must have been one of the earliest pieces of research in electrocardiography in this country. In 1889 Reid was elected, at the early age of twenty-seven, as the first holder of the newly created Chair of Physiology at University College, Dundee, where he joined a stimulating and enthusiastic band of colleagues including Geddes, D’Arcy Thompson and Ewing. Reid was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1898 and in 1904 gained the Sc.D. of his old University. Waymouth Reid served the University for forty-six years, and after his retirement in 1935 the University of St. Andrews conferred upon him an honorary degree of LL.D. He died on 10 March 1948 at the age of eighty-five.
