Scope and Content
Entries include notes on deployment of staff, particularly managers and their salaries, comparison of spinning and weaving production and costs at Seafield Works with two mills in Calcutta; rent of Seafield Works for 1878; feu duties; some details of costs of other Dundee mills and of numbers of spindles and looms; cost of carpet patterns for year ending 31 May 1884; horse-power produced and space occupied by factory engines, 1889; rough estimate of value of Seafield Works, 1892; comparison between cost of making a ton of hessian in Calcutta and at Gilroys [Dundee], 1893; statement of charges to be debited to different departments, 1904.

Thomson, Shepherd & Co. Ltd. was founded in 1848 when David Thomson, a shipmaster's son who had served an apprenticeship with James Neish, a jute pioneer, set up in business on his own in a small hand-spinning and hand-loom weaving shed. The firm was soon operating successfully and in 1852 David Thomson was granted a patent from Queen Victoria in respect of jute carpeting - the earliest patent granted in Dundee for any jute product.
