Administrative / Biographical History
Papers of Gregor Lamb. This collection of papers and photographs relating to the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Air Force in Orkney during the Second World War was deposited by Gregor Lamb from 1989 onwards. The material was compiled by Mr. Lamb for use in his book 'Sky Over Scapa 1939 - 1945' which describes the history of the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Air Force activity in Orkney during the Second World War. His interest in this subject began as a project to save the control tower at the former R.N.A.S. Twatt airfield from demolition, with a view to converting it into a Fleet Air Arm museum, but which broadened to encompass the whole range of subjects covered in 'Sky Over Scapa'. Previously a teacher in Stenness, Gregor Lamb has published a number of other books including: 'Naggless o' Piapittem, the Place Names of Sanday, Orkney'; 'Testimony of the Orkneyingar, the Place Names of Orkney'; 'Orkney Wordbook, a Dictionary of the Dialect of Orkney'; 'Orkney Surnames', as well as several articles for periodicals and journals
