Administrative / Biographical History
Richard Long was born in Bristol in 1945. He trained from 1966 -1968 at St Martin's School of Art in London, where several of his contemporaries were busy questioning traditional forms of art. As a sculptor Long adopted landscape as his material. He went on a series of walks (in Ireland, the Himalayas and the Rio Grande) and illustrated the area and his impressions of it through a collection of maps, photographs and words. By the late 1970s he was reconstructing these works in interior settings, though the walk remained the basis for collecting the natural material. He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1976, and a series of exhibitions at Anthony d'Offay Gallery from 1979. He won the Turner Prize in 1989.
