Scope and Content
The first Directory was compiled by J. B. Williams in 1894, listing the names, adddresses and instrumental specialisms for the Union's thousand plus members. As the Union grew in size the directories became a greater administrative burden and were published intermittently, on a local or regional basis rather than nationally. The directories provided a way of advertising members availability for work. Some branches were more efficient that others in producing them. Glasgow, for example, issued a series of directories in the 1950s and 1960s before the information was subsumed into a larger Scottish district directory. The London directories of the 1960s show the changing nature of the music business with rock groups like the Rolling Stones, the Who and the Zombies listed alongside orchestral and jazz musicians. By the late 1990s the directories became national again, listing all of the union's members alongside adverts for music shops and services. The last print edition of the Directory was published in 2005.
