Administrative / Biographical History
Charrington United Breweries Ltd was registered as a limited liability company in 1962 at 34 Davies Street, London, England to undertake the merger of Charrington & Co Ltd, London, and United Breweries Ltd, London, by an exchange of shares. In 1964 some 5,300 licensed properties were owned by the group. The company acquired Offilers' Brewery Ltd, Vine Brewery, Ambrose Street, Derby, Derbyshire, England, and Dunmow Brewery Ltd, Dunmow Brewery, North Street, Dunmow, Essex, England, in 1965; and Massey's Burnley Brewery Ltd, Bridge End Brewery, Westgate, Burnley, Lancashire, England, in 1966. In 1967 the company merged with Bass, Mitchells & Butlers Ltd, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England to form Bass Charrington Ltd (later Bass plc).

Custodial History
The collection was previously housed with the rest of the Scottish Brewing Archive at Heriot-Watt University. It moved to the University of Glasgow in 1991. Custody of the Scottish Brewing Archive was transferred to Glasgow University Archive Services in 2008.
