Scope and Content
Notebook (between A5 and A4, hardback) listing weavers in Lewis, organised by parish and then by village/township, alphabetically. Within each village, weavers are listed numerically, by croft/house number. Pages are numbered, with index at front.
Note on first page states 'compiled approx 1936/37', which is written over another note stating 'Approx date 1936-1938'. Another note says 'Revised from August 1956'. Some weavers have 'W.L.' after their address, which is presumed to mean 'wooden loom'. Pencil annotations on some pages (presumably made from 1956) update the original names, indicating if individuals have died, moved away, or given up weaving.
Comments from living descendents of individuals weaving during these years suggest that a) the notebook does not include everyone who was weaving at the time (and some villages are missing, e.g. Dalmore / Dail Mor), and that b) some people who are named in the notebook only weaved occasionally, and were mainly fishermen.
