Scope and Content
Lord & Taylor is the oldest department store in the USA. Samuel Lord founded the business in New York in 1826, being joined by his cousin George Washington Taylor in 1834. Their Fifth Avenue flagship store opened in 1914. The company's first expansion outside Manhattan occurred in the latter half the 1940s. The handwritten logo, still used today, was also introduced during this period. Lord & Taylor continued to expand in the 1970s and 1980s. It was acquired by May Department Stores in 1986, followed by Federated Department Stores (now Macy's Inc.) in 2005. In 2006, NRDC Equity Partners purchased Lord & Taylor (NRDC then bought Hudson's Bay Company in 2008).
