Trade marks and tariffs
- Reference:GB 3002 GD014/3/2
- Dates of Creation:1934-2007
Scope and Content
Correspondence and other paperwork relating to the use and protection of the Harris Tweed trade mark, as well as the charging of tariffs for the import of Harris Tweed into various countries, predominantly the USA.
This is a particularly large series, since one of the main functions of the HTA has always been to protect the name and reputation of Harris Tweed. The Orb mark has been registered in many countries around the world since its original registration in the UK in 1910, and the first subseries (GD014/3/2/1) consists of correspondence and papers relating to trade mark registrations and renewals. The HTA's legal representatives carry out a 'watching' service, involving the monitoring of trade mark applications and company registrations around the world, and GD014/3/2/2 contains correspondence and papers relating to this. GD014/3/2/3 consists of correspondence and papers relating to regulations produced to explain how and when the Harris Tweed trade mark can be used. Similarly, the fourth subseries (GD014/3/2/4) contains correspondence providing legal advice on how and when the Harris Tweed trade mark can be used, as well as discussion relating to the charging of tariffs for the import of Harris Tweed. GD014/3/2/5 consists of correspondence and papers, including some legal agreements, relating to infringements, both actual and potential, of the trade mark.
