Scope and Content
S.A. Newall & Sons Ltd. was started c.1906 by S.A. Newall, a farmer and flesher. The origin of Newall's mill facilities lies with the Patent Slip Carding Mill started in Stornoway in 1903 by Aeneas Mackenzie. In 1908 the mill added spinning machinery. Aeneas Mackenzie went bankrupt in 1910, at which point the company was taken over by a Mr Morrison, before being bought by an associate company of S.A. Newall & Sons Ltd. in 1918. In the 1930s the mill was upgraded to include finishing equipment - thus becoming able to cover all parts of the production process bar the weaving. Newall's and Kenneth Mackenzie's were rivals for much of the 20th century. In 1970 S.A. Newall & Sons Ltd. began 'a degree of integration' with Thomas Smith (Stornoway) Ltd., followed by becoming part of Clansman Holdings Ltd. (with Stephen Burns Ltd., who had bought the name 'Clansman' from David Tolmie c.1966) in 1972. Clansman Holdings Ltd. went into receivership in 1989, with its plant, machinery, and trading names being bought by Kenneth Macleod (Shawbost) Ltd.. The mill in Bells Road (formerly of Stephen Burns Ltd.) was later also bought by Kenneth Macleod (Shawbost) Ltd..
