Administrative / Biographical History
In 1936, a Dramatic Club was formed in the Glasgow Jewish Institute in South Portland Street, Gorbals, by Avrom Greenbaum (1903-1963), a young Polish-born tailor, playwright, actor and director. From humble beginnings, the Institute Players thrived and in 1938, the 200-seat Bloch Little Theatre was created for their use. They entered and were successful in drama competitions and had high production standards. During the Second World War, Greenbaum and some of the Players were active in the Glasgow Unity Theatre. After Greenbaum’s death, the troupe was rebranded as the Avrom Greenbaum Players and on the closure of the Institute, was relocated in the new Jewish Welfare Centre at 49 Coplaw Street in Govanhill, where they performed until the late 1980s.
