Administrative / Biographical History
Hilda Goldwag (1912 - 2008) was a refugee artist from Vienna who escaped to Scotland in April 1939. She travelled on a Domestic Employment Visa arranged by Hedwig, wife of Professor Max Born then in Edinburgh, and their daughter who was studying in Vienna, where she met Hilda. When war broke out Hilda, along with fellow refugee Cecile Schwartzschild, relocated to Glasgow. Hilda and Cecile became lifelong friends. During the war, in Glasgow, Hilda worked as a turner. After the war, she became head of design at Friedlander textile print and weaving company. Later she worked as an art occupational therapist and as a freelance book and magazine illustrator. She was a prolific painter and an exhibiting member of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists.
