Scope and Content
The Baillie archive includes papers of several members of the family, mainly:
- William Baillie (1737-1782), a career Army officer who died in India;
- his brother John (d1797), also an Army officer who died while on service in Ireland;
- John's wife Isabella (d1832);
- John and Isabella's children: Alick (died c1805), Archibald (died 1817), Katherine (died c1819), Anne (died early 1860s) and William (14th laird and last of the line, 1789-1869).
Isabella assumed responsibility for the estate after John Baillie's death, duties which fell to Anne (who never married) after her mother's death, since her brother William was incapable of managing his own affairs. Isabella and Anne corresponded widely, and their letters to professional people, family and friends, form a substantial part of the archive.Access Information
